Questioning One's Faith... An Abomination?
Applying reasoning to weigh in on both spiritual and natural claims of phenomena around us is a God-given and a God-glorifying mandate, as we are admonished to love God…with our minds too. Questioning and reasoning is not the sole attribute of the critic, but the learner also.
At this point, I would zero in on Christianity. Questioning is an age-long art in the faith we profess as the fathers of old always used it. Biblical characters like Job, Jeremiah and Habakkuk, raised tons of thought-provoking questions to the God we serve. And guess what, He gladly answered them.
Suffice to say, it's a death wish to question the beliefs of some religious faiths.
Unfortunately, a time came where it became an 'abomination' to question the God of the Bible or the Christian faith as it was perpetrated by the early church reformers. This has continued even to this day.
This has made Christians incapable of defending the faith when asked thought-provoking questions.
This made the Christian faith seem baseless and at best, a myth in the eyes of 'reasonable and critical thinkers.'
Christians should have been encouraged to ask thought-provoking questions, and listen to dissenting views with patience and tact since the holy scriptures enjoin us to be ready to give an ‘apology’ or defense for the faith, in meekness and love.
It is worthy to note that Faith is not necessarily antithetical to science because the birth of science was in the back of the great truth that the ‘the laws the govern the universe was constant, anchored on Intelligent design which makes a study of it possible.’
How could we ever learn anything if gravity fluctuated every now and then, or what was today was not tomorrow? What if tomorrow wasn’t even possible?
This is why the truth of faith can be questioned. We're able to understand and defend our faith better through questioning.
Jesus is Lord.
