THE SEXUAL OBLIGATION
Religions of different forms and kinds together with cultural adaptations mostly but not definitely, make sex or sexual activities a taboo to be discussed in normal conversation. However, in as much as they try, the animalistic part of mankind remains only suppressed temporarily and manifested exceedingly at the sight of the slightest stimulus. Intimate sex, no matter the people involved, that is; same sexes or opposite sexes has in it’s final determination a fulfilment or denial of all or part of the sexual obligation. These biological responsibilities are; the obligation to the human species and the obligation to the individual.
In many cultural settings, the primary aim of sex is to satisfy the obligation to the human species; propagation or reproduction. It is regarded as a moral obligation for all humans to ensure that our species continue to exist and therefore humans must reproduce. In most cultures, that is the final aim of intimate sex and because reproduction is the goal, those cultures forbid same sexes having intimate relationship. That is why parents and families pressure their children, son or daughter in-laws to give birth. This has led to the collapse of many marriages and conflicts in many homes. Failure to reproduce leaves a heavy weight on the individual and to some extent the family as the individual is disregard and dishonoured among his colleagues who were able to satisfy their obligation to the human species.
On the other hand is the obligation to the individual; ourselves. This is our desire or so to say responsibility to enjoy sex. Enjoyment of sexual pleasure is a responsibility the individual owes himself or herself. Many marriages and relationships are falling apart not because their spouses are unable to fulfill the obligation to the human species but due to the fact that, their partners are unable to meet the demands of sexual pleasure. It is for the same reason a lot of drugs are being marketed on our televisions, radios and in newspapers mostly targeting men. These drugs are to boost erection in men and provide them with energy in order to satisfy the sexual obligation of their women. A man who is unable to meet this responsibility of his woman is ridiculed by both men and women. Women in such marriages or relationships often flirt with other men. Women who are unable to handle their men well in bed during sexual intercourse also have their men chasing other women who make them experience that intrauterine pleasure.
Interestingly, people who wish to fulfill just their obligation to the human species are not at times concerned about the obligation to the individual. To such people, no matter the duration of sex or the pleasure, they derive gratification in the fact that, they are able to reproduce. Persons who do not wish to fulfill the obligation to the human species are likely to be homosexuals. This is due to the anxiety or trauma experienced at birth. These men are not able to recognize and appreciate the female sex organs as a source of pleasure but rather, the female organs are taken as a tool for propagation and trauma. So once they don’t want to reproduce, the female sex organs are of no significance to them. They dread the vagina.
Again, this also explains why a man may enjoy sexual pleasure with a woman but feels betrayed when the issue of pregnancy comes in. Women also resort to contraceptives for the same reason. But in African homes, even if the couples intended actions were to gratify the obligation to the individual, society pressure in some ways forces them to oblige to the human species. It is also important to note that, both obligations can be achieved.
