Karl Marx a socialist is credited for this statement. He is of the view that religion is just an ideology that people in power use to get away with a lot in society. Not only did it make them get away with a lot of wrongdoings it made people being mistreated okay with it by appeasing them.
The poor who are taken advantage of is given hope by religion thinking there is a blessing in being poor or there would be a reward in the afterlife, hence are okay with whatever treatment meted out to them.
He is of the view the rich steal from the poor and religion makes them
Okay with this.
What do we see in our society today, politicians who are meant to represent the mass go into offices and steal, then religious leaders preach for them not to retaliate or rise up but leave judgment to God.
Religion is logic in a popular form. What people think is acceptable is not always what is naturally acceptable.
Religion serves as social control, people would just do anything but are checked or held accountable by religion. In a way, it prevents people from showing who they truly are.
