THE LAMP DEVOTION
2 Corinthians 6:16-18
16 And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will dwell in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they shall be My people.†17 Therefore “Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you.†18 “I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the LORD Almighty.â€
Our decision to give our lives to Christ changed our status. We became children of God according to John 1 and verse 12: “as many as received Him to them He gave power to become children of Godâ€. That passage continues to say that we became born again, not according to the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
Jesus Christ shed His blood to redeem us from the curse of the law. That means He bought us with His own blood. When you buy something, everyone accepts without argument that what you paid for now belongs to you. It no longer belongs to the shop you bought it from. God bought us from the slave market through the sacrifice of His Son and so we belong to God. The Apostle Paul teaches that we have become the temple of God.
The immediate implication is that we no longer live for ourselves. We live for the One who bought us. That is the reason God asks us to come out from amongst them. This call is to come out of the world and have nothing to do with the works of darkness. We are to shun the unclean and by that affirm our sonship relationship with our heavenly Father. We cannot belong to God and the world at the same time.
Prayer
1. Thank God for buying you from the slave market and making you His temple.
2. Pray for sensitivity to the truth that you are God’s temple.
3. Father, please help me shun the world and all its sinful offers, since I am now Yours.
Declarations
I declare that I have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ my Lord. That makes me belong to God. I am no longer my own. God owns me and my life is now lived according to His principles and commandments. My body is God’s holy temple and I will no longer defile it for any reason in the name of Jesus.
