THE LAMP DEVOTION
Job 32:6-9
6 So Elihu, the son of Baruchel the Buzite, answered and said: “I am young in years, and you are very old; Therefore, I was afraid, and dared not declare my opinion to you. 7 I said, ‘Age should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom.’ 8 But there is a spirit in man, and the breath of the Almighty gives him understanding. 9 Great men are not always wise, nor do the aged always understand justice.
These statements from the Book of Job takes on the conventionally accepted notion that the longer someone has lived on earth the wiser that person is. What is often kept under the surface is the condition that can always make the statement true.
We know the condition to be the fear of God. Take for example someone who has lived for 70 years without the fear of God, it is unlikely that he will be a wise person by biblical standards. He may have gleaned on some wisdom through mistakes he may have made in life, but still fall short in significant ways.
We are often careful not to sound offensive, especially if the person has money and his money always goes ahead of him wherever he goes. It becomes difficult not to describe such a person as wise. Take someone very rich who cannot keep his family together; how wise would you categorize such a person to be since keeping a family intact is a fundamental principle of living on earth?
Job established the sure way for a person to be wise – walk by the spirit. This is because your spirit has the capacity to receive from God and impart your entire being regarding what is right and what is wrong. If you live by your spirit as a child of God, you hardly get things wrong. Wise people get it right always.
Prayer
1. Thank God for being the ultimate Source of Wisdom for you in life’s situations.
2. Pray that you will have the humility to tap into God so you can develop into a wise person.
3. Father, please quicken my spirit to receive from Your Spirit all that makes a man wise.
Declarations
I declare that I have the fear of God in me. My life is guided exclusively by what God has said in His word and what He daily reminds me of. Therefore, I am potentially a wise person. As I listen more to God, I declare that I shall become a wise person wherever I go, and in every situation I find myself in, in the name of Jesus.
