Jeremiah. 44:7-8
7 “Now, therefore, thus says the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘Why do you commit this great evil against yourselves, to cut off from you man and woman, child and infant, out of Judah, leaving none to remain, 8 in that you provoke Me to wrath with the works of your hands, burning incense to other gods in the land of Egypt where you have gone to dwell, that you may cut yourselves off and be a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth?
The fundamental definition of adultery describes the situation where a man has relations with another man’s wife; primarily having sexual relations with someone you are not married to. God used the term adultery in the context that this passage portrays. In God’s dealings with His children in bible times, He referred to adultery as the practice in which they owed allegiance to other gods and got entangled with their practices rather faithfully serving Him wholeheartedly.
It was as though they were married to God but went behind Him to offer sacrifices and allowed their lives to be directed by gods of other nations. This was a violation of the commandment to have no other gods before Jehovah. God was angry on two fronts. First, they were burning incense to other gods. We all know that burning incense was part of worship in the Old Testament; so, God held them accountable for worshipping other gods. Secondly, we know that life that results from allegiance to other gods cannot please Jehovah in any way.
Today humanity does the same, both in worship and in lifestyles resulting from allegiance to ideologies that do not glorify God. Christians today must be careful not to offend God by committing such spiritual adultery. Please break away from any relationship you have established with the world.
Prayer
1. Thank God for His continued commitment to the relationship He has with you.
2. Pray that you will reciprocate the love and commitment God exhibits towards you.
3. Father, please free me from all adulterous tendencies and stay faithful to You.
Declarations
I declare that I am married to Christ. I am His bride as part of the body of Christ; the bride He is coming back one day to redeem completely from this life of sin and death. I repent of all adulterous relationships with the world. All I have received from the world that has taken your place in my life I discount and throw away. Henceforth, my life shall be inspired by Elohim and I will walk with Him alone all the days of my life in the name of Jesus.
