THE LAMP DEVOTION
Genesis 32:26-29
26 And He said, “Let Me go, for the day breaks.†But he said, “I will not let You go unless You bless me!†27 So He said to him, “What is your name?†He said, “Jacob.†28 And He said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.†29 Then Jacob asked, saying, “Tell me Your name, I pray.†And He said, “Why is it that you ask about My name?†And He blessed him there.
This I am sure is a familiar narrative. Jacob was coming back from living with his uncle Laban with his two wives and children. He was afraid of meeting his brother Esau, so he sent batches of his people ahead. On one of the evenings Jacob had a dream in which he wrestled with an angel the whole night.
Why did they have to battle the whole night? Jacob asked the angel to bless him before he left. The angel pleaded with him, but Jacob persevered till the angel finally blessed him and touched his hip bone.
The angel changed his name from Jacob to Israel and made a profound statement. He acknowledged Jacob’s persevering spirit in not giving up on his request to be blessed. His perseverance yielded the anticipated results. He was blessed and his name was changed to align with the blessing.
Jacob wrestled with an angel. It was not a fight of exchanging blows and trying to flaw one another like we see in a traditional wrestling match. It was perseverance. It was like touching the helm of Jesus’ garment except this time Jacob held on a bit longer. The simple question is this: how long can you persevere in a petition you place before God? That is what makes the difference. Think about it.
Prayer
1. Thank God for His willingness to bless you.
2. Pray for the spirit of perseverance to continue coming to God week after week and may be, months or even years until He answers your prayers.
3. Father, please grant me perseverance to continue holding on till my breakthrough comes.
Declarations
I declare that what God has for me will certainly come to me. No matter how long it may take, I hold on. I refuse to give up. I shall continue knocking at heaven’s door till the answer comes. When I get weak, I shall draw fresh strength from the Holy Spirit and persevere until I prevail in the name of Jesus.
