THE LAMP DEVOTION
1 Peter 5:6-9
6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, 7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. 8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world
There are two tactics in the spiritual warfare all believers are engaged in today. The first one is prayer. Prayer has received more attention than any other practice in the Christian experience. The truth is that despite all that, some still do not have a lifestyle of prayer. There are some who even talk as if prayer is no longer important and that what we need is knowledge. That is also stretching truth to the extreme. We need prayer, even with all the knowledge we have.
The other strategy that is often not talked about or assumed, it is being watchful. Jesus taught that we should watch and pray that we do not enter into temptation. He did not say we should pray alone or watch alone. He said we should watch and pray.
How do we explain the situation where people tagged as “prayer warriors†fall to diverse temptations? They can stand and pray for three hours non-stop and a few hours after, fall into temptation. The explanation is simple. Most believers are not as watchful as the Lord wants them to be. If we are watchful, we can see temptation coming.
God told Cain to watch out. He did not heed. He was not watchful enough to see death at the door, and so killed his brother. Today God is saying to us loud and clear: “Watch outâ€!
Prayer
1. Thank God for the victory Jesus won over the devil for you and l.
2. Pray that you will develop the habit of watching out so you can see temptation when it shows up.
3. Father, please help me to pray, and watch out to recognize temptations.
Declarations
I declare that I am not unaware of the ways of the devil. I pay heed to the command of Jesus to watch and pray. I shall no longer separate the two. From today, I declare by the grace of God that my Christian life shall hinge on praying and watching. I have the spirit of discernment and I use it to detect temptation when it is miles away and overcome it in the name of Jesus.
