Romans 10:13-15a
13 For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.†14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace.
The church today is busy doing many good things. We are expanding our physical facilities and making them look exquisite. We do this to attract people who judge things by the outward look. There are people who may not come to your church because the physical environment does not look nice. There is nothing wrong about it. There is everything right about keeping God’s house clean and appealing to the human senses.
One of the challenges about this is that our focus is shifting from the Great commission God gave. We hope that we will win people by creating those nice environments. Is it possible that we get them to come and many of them remain either unsaved or are not disciples of Jesus? Think about that.
Reaching out to the lost through the gospel is one command that is losing attention because of the extreme concentration on the physical outlook of our meeting places. Let everyone balance the budget to see how much goes into infrastructure and how much goes into missions and evangelism. God is always looking for people to send. Many potential missionaries are in hiding because the overall commitment of the church to missions is waning. When we send people to the underdeveloped areas for missions they are on their own and struggle to make it there. It is time to revisit our mission agenda.
