THE LAMP DEVOTION
Ephesians 6:1-4
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother,†which is the first commandment with promise: 3 “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.†4 And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord
This is a popular passage that many have encountered several times, especially parents. Most parents want their children to memorize this scripture, write it behind the doors of their rooms if they live in separate rooms, etc. Children have heard this instruction so many times they get fed up hearing it again and again. Every parent has the responsibility to encourage their children to never give up obeying them because it is God’s command. If you find rebellious tendencies in your growing children, in addition to disciplining them, take it to prayer. Ask God for His direct intervention in their thinking, attitudes and feelings.
The other half of the passage or instruction that is often ignored, overlooked or simply pushed into the background is the one for parents. “Fathers, do not provoke your children to angerâ€. See the immediate possible outcome of the provocation: anger or wrath. Disobedience, rebellion and many of the behaviors young growing people show to their parents come out of anger. Sometimes, anger that has come as a result of parents provoking their children instead of entreating them.
Remember that parents have greater responsibility toward God’s standard in the home. Let’s say that the period when you could tell your child to do something in a particular way because you are his/her father or mother is over. It may yield some temporary results, but it builds up anger that will explode in a matter of time. Instead continue to teach them lovingly to love God’s word. It’s the Truth that will set them free.
Prayer
1. Thank God for being a good Father to you. That is the reason you still look up to Him.
2. Pray that you will either be an obedient son or daughter to your parents or a non-provoking parent.
3. Father, please help me to live my portion of your word for today.
Declarations
I understand God’s instruction for a healthy parent-child relationship. As a parent, I take responsibility for the tension between me and my children. I receive greater grace to be the loving and caring parent I should be. Henceforth, I walk in knowledge and understanding in relating with my children and may the Lord bless my efforts in the name of Jesus.
