THE LAMP DEVOTION
John 13:33-35
33 Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ so now I say to you. 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.â€
It is interesting the criteria Jesus uses as standard for people to know we are His disciples. One would expect something like casting of devils, healing the sick and working of miracles. Jesus acknowledges all these, and they are part of the signs that shall follow all who believe in Jesus even in this post-modern world. Yet Jesus placed the emphasis on love; specifically love of the brethren.
There is one reality that we have allowed to affect us in showing love to one another – hurts, disappointments, etc. from other members of the family of God. You often hear countless stories about Christians who have decided to close up in relating with practically everyone because somebody in the Body of Christ hurt them so badly.
We often try to understand people’s feelings from their experiences, but brethren, let’s face it; no one’s experience is above the word of God. No matter how hard you might have been hurt, remember it is God who is asking us to forgive one another and live as family. It is not you or the person who offended you. Let’s start opening up to each other again so that the love of God already in us will flow to each other in very practical ways.
Prayer
1. Thank God for loving you despite all you do against Him.
2. Pray that you will cultivate a caring and compassionate heart to love even those who hurt you badly in the past year or two and beyond.
3. Father, please free me from all the obstacles that block the flow of Your love through me.
Declarations
I declare that God my heavenly Father is the essence of love. God is love and I am His child. Therefore, I also am love. I have the capacity to love like my heavenly Father. I can love people irrespective of who they are, what they do and whether they like me or not. Henceforth, I will walk in this love by the power of God in Jesus name.
