THE LAMP DEVOTION
2 Peter 1:5-9
5 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to_ virtue knowledge, 6 to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance Godliness, 7 to Godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love 8 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren_ nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins.
No one wants to be described as short-sighted. Short-sightedness is not complimentary. It is
derogatory and gives a poor image of oneself. Today’s passage gives another version of
short-sightedness. It says the person is blind. The passage is still specific about the blindness
being referred to in the passage. The Apostle says the person who is short-sighted has
forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. It as though he has never been born again at
in the first place.
Shortsightedness will lead to barrenness and unfruitfulness in the knowledge of our Lord
Jesus Christ. How can you fully experience the Christian life if your knowledge of our lord
Jesus Christ is limited or woefully inadequate. God wants us to have a fruitful Christian
experience, so He did not leave us in the dark.
The Apostle writes principles and practices that should accompany our basic faith in Jesus as
Lord and Savior. What he wrote is similar to what the Apostle Paul wrote elsewhere which
he described as the fruit of the Spirit. That makes it the mouth of two witnesses, and that
affirms those principles and practices as authentic for a true Christian experience.
Anyone who walks in these shows that he has been saved and purged from his old sins. We owe it to ourselves not to be categorized as short-sighted. Do well to add to your faith these
virtues.
Prayer
1. Thank God for saving you from your sins and providing all you need to live an
enjoyable Christian life.
2. Pray that you will add all virtues to your faith in Christ Jesus our Savior.
3. Father, please help me walk in all the virtues presented in this passage for a fruitful
Christian experience.
Declarations
I declare that I am a candidate of a fruitful Christian experience. My heart is open, and my
mind is made up to walk in all the virtues of love, Godliness, perseverance, self-control. I
declare that these will abound in my life and my Christian life will be refreshing and fulfilling
in the name of Jesus.
