Hostel Rents Skyrocket as Students' Demand for Accommodation Increases.

Over the past few weeks, there have been massive clamouring for accommodation among students in the University of Cape Coast. Many of them are left frustrated as they are either not able to get an accommodation or are met with outrageous hostel fees.
This recent surge in hostel facility demands could be attributed to the increased intake of first year students by the University the previous year.
Despite the fact that rents were just increased in most hostels about a year ago, rents have been increased again this year by over 70% the previous increment. Pleas from students all over the University community for reduction in price have fallen on deaf ears with some hostel managers even going as far as demanding full payments upfront.
Given the current economic situation in the country, many students claim that they cannot afford the mind-blowing rents recently being demanded by some of these hostel facilities. As it stands now, rents for hostels in the most remote parts of the University community range between 2500-4000 Ghana cedis per academic year, whereas hostel facilities located in busy environments closer to the University campus demand rents ranging from 5000-8000 Ghana cedis per academic year. These figures being twice or even thrice the tuition fees of these students.
Reliable sources from the management board of some of the hostel facilities attribute the spike in prices to the ravaging pandemic and the economic losses it brought to their business the previous year. Inasmuch as their assertion is correct, students still call on various stakeholders within the University to look into the current situation, with hope that proper regulations will be put in place pretty soon.
Kudos for creating such awareness ðŸ‘ðŸ”
