THE LAMP DEVOTION
Matthew 5:17-20
17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18 For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 19 Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.
What did Jesus mean when He said he did not come to destroy the law but to fulfill it? Some people think since no man can be saved by obeying the law, we no longer need to put ourselves under the law. Let’s get that truth clarified. No one can be saved by keeping the law. We are saved by grace through faith in the finished work of Christ. That’s how Jesus fulfilled the law.
To live the Christian life after we are saved however, we need to know God’s law. You shall not commit adultery for example is a part of God’s law for the believer to obey but the grace of God is available to enable us do so. If unbelievers go after other people’s wives, they are walking in darkness; but the child of God is expected to walk in the light. Adultery has no place in the light.
The truth is that Jesus raised the bar and placed us under a higher law. He said lusting in your heart is adultery already committed, anger without a cause is already murder committed. This is what Jesus meant when He said your righteousness should exceed that of the Scribes and Pharisees. By the grace of God, we are equipped for this level of living through the power of the Holy Spirit because of the finished work of Christ.
Prayer
1. Thank God for equipping you for holy living under any circumstance you find yourself in.
2. Pray for the ability to draw power from the Holy Spirit for a holy life.
3. Father, please lead me in the way of righteousness and help me follow.
Declarations
I declare by divine authority that I have been equipped by a higher law to live a life that pleases God. I no longer see myself as a weakling, but as one that is empowered by the Holy Ghost to do exploits. I declare by divine authority, that by the strength of Elohim I shall live my life on earth to glorify God.
