Watch Your Tongue

THE LAMP DEVOTION
Proverbs: 18:20-21
A man’s stomach shall be satisfied from the fruit of his mouth; from the produce of his lips, he shall be filled. 21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
Life presents us with people at two ends of the tendency to talk. There are those who are always talking and those who seldom talk. Then there are those in between. Several factors account for this observation so it is not wise to pass judgement on any of them per se. What is important however, is the value or otherwise of what comes out of the mouths of those who talk; the one who talks all the time, the one who seldom talks and those in between.
Our words either make way for us or create obstacles for us in this life. The Bible puts it in the way described in today’s passage: “death and life are in the power of the tongue.â€
Elsewhere we are exhorted to tame our tongues because it cannot bless and curse at the same time. God would have us use words to bless people, exhort them unto righteousness, bring hope to humanity and fix the problems of society.
God expects that every word we speak will be seasoned with salt to bless our hearers.
When we fail to do this then the other side of the equation hits us. That is when God tells us we will give account of every idle word we speak. God is not witch hunting to see who is speaking well and who is not. Human experience however is full of people speaking before thinking. Before you go to bed each day, just play back all the statements you have made and ask whether they produced life of death.
Prayer
1. Thank God for the gift of communication; that you have the ability to talk.
2. Pray that you will talk out of the fear of God in you, as you are led by the Holy Spirit.
3. Father, please help me bridle my tongue so every word that comes from me will edify my hearers.
Declarations
I declare that my whole being is yielded to Jesus. With my tongue I will continually make declarations and pronouncements to bless my world. When men hear me, they shall be lifted from despair to hope, the simple shall receive wisdom, the lost shall find their way and the weak shall be strengthened. I declare that by this will Elohim be glorified in the name of Jesus.
