Galatians 3:10-12
For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them.†11 But that no one is justified by the law in the sight of God is evident, for “the just shall live by faith.†12 Yet the law is not of faith, but “the man who does them shall live by them.â€
This passage reminds us that in all things, it is God who declares us righteous. Traditionally, it addresses the fact that no man is justified before God by obeying the law. God gave the Ten Commandments as standard for keeping the law. After that Moses gave several laws that ooze from the Ten commandments. Under the Old covenant men tried to obey the law to gain acceptance before God. This was righteous standing before God.
Several years of human experience however showed that it is difficult to attain righteous standing by obeying the law. God had already figured it out. He allowed us to go through that so we can appreciate His grace when it kicks in.
Yes, the Law came through Moses, but grace came through our Lord Jesus Christ. These are fundamental truths that cannot be altered. We receive our justification by the blood of the new covenant.
The extension of this is that no man can elevate himself before God by what he does. We must be conscious of the fact that it is God alone who declares us righteous, whether righteous standing or walking in righteousness. The moment we forget grace and feel good about ourselves because of what we do, we place ourselves under the law again. That was Paul’s issue with the church in Galatia. Only God justifies anything we do.
